In this episode of TIG Time we look at TIG welding Heavy wall 4130 Chrome Moly. When welding “Heavy Wall” 4130 there are a few more steps involved than if you were attempting to weld thin gage Chrome Moly.
Setup and Pre Heating:
Before you begin welding there are a few things that you will want to do. First, you are going to want to clean the area around the weld (about 1/2″) with a wire wheel. This will help get rid of any contaminates. After the area is clean, cold tack the work piece in anywhere from 6 – 10 spots. Next comes the pre-heat process. It is important to pre-heat your material to 300 degrees Fahrenheit before you begin any welding. The reason we do this is, because if you don’t you will likely get martensite. Martensite is a grain structure that forms that will cause pre-mature cracking (especially when the work piece is exposed to side load impacts). To ensure that you reach the necessary 300o you will want to use a temp stick. You can pick up temp sticks at your local welding supply house in a variety of temperatures.
Welding:
Once you get to the proper temperature and your work area is clean and prepped you are ready to weld. The first pass (root pass) is the most critical and will carry approximately 90% of the welds strength. This makes technique like torch angle very important. Try at all costs to maintain your 15o torch angle.
