Many people complain they cannot start forging because they do not have a anvil. Here is your solution.
Given the number on people pointing out the use of an anvil to make an anvil I thought I would write a brief explanation.
I forged round bar into flatbar. I did this because I did not have any medium carbon steel flatbar, if I had, I would have used it. If you want to make an anvil like the one I made here, you can buy flatbar, or you can skip the adding on the flatbar all together.
Furthermore, I added in the forging into this video because I thought it would make it more interesting then if the video only contained cutting, welding, and grinding.
Finally, why is the forging being pointed out of everyone? I used a milling machine, welder, and grinder in this video. All of those tools cost more then a mild steel block suitable for forging would have cost. Even the extension cord for the welder cost more! You can buy mild steel for between $1-$2/lb NEW. A 50lb block will serve you well for starting out.
Given the above, why do people nit-pick at the forging? Is it because I included it in the video? Why do people continue to repeat the irony even after it has been addressed in the video and the comments? I don’t know, there are some mysteries in life which can never be rationally explained.
