Designed for direct cover for ground troops and destroy air targets at ranges of up to 2500 m and 1500 m altitude, flying at a speed of 450 m / s, and the ground (surface) targets at ranges up to 2000 meters away, with a short stop in movement.

Was evaluated as a potential enemy air defense systems, which pose a serious threat to low-flying targets. It is now considered obsolete, mainly because of the characteristics and capabilities of its radar and lack of effective range of fire at air targets. Named after the river Shilka, left prtitoka Cupid.
The ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” is a lightly armored, self-propelled, radar guided anti-aircraft weapon system (SPAAG). The acronym “ZSU” stands for Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka (Russian: Зенитная Самоходная Установка), meaning “anti-aircraft self-propelled mount”; the “23″ signifies the bore diameter in millimeters; the “4″ signifies the number of gun barrels. It is named after the Russian Shilka River. Afghan soldiers nicknamed it (sewing machine) due to the sound of firing guns and because of the similarity of the name “Shilka” to the Russian word “шить” (Russian pronunciation: [ʂitʲ], meaning “to sew”). It is also referred to by its nickname of “Zeus.”
