Steel: As has been the case for steel used in the seismic force-resisting system since the 2006 IBC, the special inspection and testing requirements for all structural steel are now included in the 2012 IBC only by reference to the quality assurance provisions of AISC 360, Chapter N. This represents a major change in both the terminology used for the frequency of inspections, and the way welding and bolting inspection tasks are defined. This webinar compares and contrasts the new provisions with the old, and points out how inspections for some commonly used steel elements may no longer be appropriately covered.
Concrete: Concrete is now the only material other than cold-formed steel, which has special inspection requirements still included in 2012 IBC Chapter 17, although testing requirements are by reference to ACI 318-11, which in turn references multiple ASTM specifications. The all-important 2012 IBC Table 1705.3, Required Verification and Inspection of Concrete Construction, is discussed in detail. Significant changes from the 2009 IBC will be pointed out. In that context, the inspection of concrete anchors is discussed in particular.
