In this video we take a look at comparing batch sizes of friction weldments vs. turning a a piece of bar stock down to a similar dimension on smaller batch runs. The initial application called for a roughly 5 ft long piece of bar stock with a 6.5″ diameter that was then turned down to 3.5″ diameters creating two “Arms”.
While the material savings are not a large compared to higher volumes the throughput time for the final machining operation is greatly increased.
