China has cried foul over a US decision to raise anti-dumping duties against Chinese steel. The US Commerce Department has ruled that imports of Chinese stainless steel products are at below fair market value. Based on its findings, the department decided to impose anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on Chinese stainless steel imports at between 76 percent and 190 percent. China’s Ministry of Commerce called the US decision “unfair” and said it was worried that more trade restrictions will be taken. Is this first blood in a brewing trade war? Expert opinion comes from Dr. Hu Zuliu from the China-based Primavera Capital Group; Charles Freeman, a former Assistant US Trade Representative for China Affairs, now with Bower Group Asia; and Steve Pruitt from Watts Partners, a former staff director of the US House of Representatives’ Committee on the Budget.
