Sugaring a Blade. Carburizing a Knife With Sugar.

3:45 – Experiment begins.

Urban legend says you can put sugar (which has lots of carbon in it) on a red hot knife or blade to draw the carbon into the metal (carburization). This could potentially turn a piece of soft mild steel into a harder piece of high carbon steel making it a better blade or increase the carbon in an already high carbon piece of steel. Here I test, first, whether sugar is a viable source of carbon for carburization and, second, whether carburization happens under the conditions of the myth.
