Quick tutorial on how to make the – for lack of a more adequate description – Swiss style blacksmith’s tongs. These tongs can hold any shape of stock, from round over square, rectangular and flat/sheet over a wider range of sizes than normal tongs. Different to the similar Pelgrom style, they also hold the same stock perpendicularly, such as for upsetting or holding a chisel to strike. Because the ends meet, they’re also better pickup tongs. In the video I use 16mm coil spring, which allows for a lighter, i.e. finer build, but normal mild steel works too. Spring steel gives you some weight savings for traveling with these versatile tongs, the drawback is you should no longer quench them in water when hot, as they’ll become hardened and brittle. The pair made in the video can hold flat stock from 0.5mm to about 10mm and round or square stocks from 12-20mm. The tongs used to make them are the same style, but bigger, suitable for flat from 5-12mm and round and square from about 15-25mm (1″). You can see how versatile they are in the video.
