Test – VFVT 4160 SC2090

How to machine high tensile tool steel (1.2344) with carbide end mills to make for example aluminium extrusion dies.

In the first part of the video the axial depth of the cutter is equal to 1x diameter, in this case 16mm. The radial cutting width is 0,75xD which is 12mm. You can hear the end mill shattering.

In the second part the same pocket is machined, however now the axial cutting depth has been increased to 1.5xD being 24mm deep. The radial cutting width is still 0,75xD being 12 mm. Now, with the higher workload, the shattering has dissappeared and the end runs smoothly.

In the third part you can see that the surface quality of the pocket machined with 1.5xD axial cutting depth results in a very nice surface finish.
